Derek Wentorf, Senior Consultant

Derek is known as a passionate and trusted advocate for children, youth and adults, having worked his entire career delivering, managing, and funding these services. He brings his skills as a strategic thinker and effective facilitator to projects and collaborations that plan and directly serve youth and young adults in Washington. He has also provided strong leadership for system change and development efforts to: end homelessness; mentor and support child welfare and court-involved children; and, provide supports to vulnerable families.
At Friends of Youth, he brought his strategic leadership, program development knowledge, and management expertise to the role of Director of Homeless Services. While there, the Homeless Youth Services division expanded from a $1.8 million annual budget in 2012 to $3.1 million annual budget in 2017. Friends of Youth is now recognized as the regional leader in addressing youth and young adult homelessness in East & North King County. Prior to that, he worked at United Way of King County, managing grants, stewarding donors, and leading strategic endeavors, such as the first youth and young adult homelessness count, to increase the awareness of youth struggling through homelessness in King County. At United Way and Children’s Home Society of Washington, he managed large community events and collaborations like the Day of Caring and University of Washington’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. He’s brought a commitment to improved access and quality of services to each organization. 
Derek’s strengths include: program development, implementation, and management; braiding of complex homeless and social service funding; strategic planning and analysis; development of training and technical assistance services; small group facilitation; donor cultivation; and, coalition building. He is pleased to bring his experience in the non-profit and philanthropic sectors to support organizations and collaborations as they address challenges within their community. 
A native of the Midwest, Derek is passionate about exploring the beautiful areas of the Pacific Northwest and can be found most weekends running or biking along the shores of the Puget Sound. Derek is an uncle to 6 wonderful nieces & nephews and tries to travel as regularly as possible to see family in Denver and Indiana.
